An arm care program is one of the most important things an overhead athlete can do to stay healthy and perform at a high level.
Whether you're a baseball pitcher, softball player, volleyball hitter, or tennis player, your shoulder and elbow endure tremendous repetitive stress. Without a structured arm care routine, you're leaving performance on the table and increasing your risk of injury.
What Is an Arm Care Program?
An arm care program is a systematic approach to maintaining shoulder and elbow health through targeted exercises that address mobility, strength, stability, and recovery. It's not just about stretching — it's about building the capacity of the tissues around the joint to handle the demands of your sport.
Key Components
Mobility
Maintaining adequate range of motion is critical. We assess shoulder external rotation, internal rotation, flexion, and horizontal adduction to identify any limitations that could contribute to injury.
Strength
The rotator cuff, scapular stabilizers, and surrounding musculature need to be strong enough to control the arm through its full range of motion. This includes both concentric and eccentric strength.
Stability
Stability exercises train the nervous system to control the joint dynamically. This is where exercises like bottoms-up presses and rhythmic stabilization come in.
Recovery
Recovery strategies include proper warm-up routines, post-throwing protocols, and monitoring workload to ensure the arm has time to adapt between sessions.
