In both sports physical therapy and personal growth, one of the most subtle mindset traps is what psychologists call the When-Then Fallacy.
It sounds like this:
- "WHEN my back completely stops hurting, THEN I'll start lifting weights again."
- "WHEN season ends, THEN I'll fix my shoulder mechanics."
- "WHEN I get more free time, THEN I'll start an arm care routine."
Why the When-Then Mindset Fails
The flaw in conditional thinking is that it delays proactive action. In physical therapy, waiting for pain to 100% resolve before moving actually delays healing. Controlled movement, blood flow, and progressive loading are the very things that resolve pain in the first place.
Shifting to "Even-If" Action
Instead of "When-Then," top athletes adopt an "Even-If" or "How-Can-I" mindset:
- "Even if my shoulder feels stiff, what entry-level movement CAN I do safely today?"
- "Even if I only have 10 minutes, I can complete two key arm care drills."
Taking Proactive Control
Action creates momentum. By modifying movements to fit your current capacity, you build resilience and rebuild confidence step by step.
